Budle Bay Campsite: Adding Battery Storage to an Existing Solar PV System
Immersa partnered with HCA Energy to support the addition of commercial battery storage at Budle Bay Campsite, building on the site's existing 65kWp solar PV installation. Rather than replacing the existing renewable infrastructure, the project adds an AlphaESS G3-H50 with a 120.5kWh DC Extension Cabinet, providing a total battery capacity of 50kW / 241kWh. The solution gives the campsite greater ability to capture and use its existing renewable generation, helping reduce reliance on imported electricity and maximise the value of its solar investment.

Project Objective:
Increase the value of existing solar generation through battery storage
Core Benefit:
Expanded battery capacity to increase on-site renewable energy utilisation
Challenge
Budle Bay Campsite already had 65kWp of solar PV installed, providing a strong foundation for reducing grid electricity consumption. However, as with many existing commercial solar installations, generation and site demand do not always align. Adding battery storage offered an opportunity to retain more renewable energy on-site and make better use of generation outside peak solar hours. The solution therefore needed to integrate effectively with the existing infrastructure while providing sufficient storage capacity for the site's requirements.
Approach
- Supplying the AlphaESS G3-H50
- Supplying a 120.5kWh DC Extension Cabinet
- Engineering and technical integration support
- Supporting the retrofit of battery storage alongside the existing PV system
- The extension cabinet enabled additional storage capacity to be added without requiring another inverter, creating a flexible 50kW / 241kWh configuration.
Products & Services
Products
- AlphaESS G3-H50 – 50kW / 120.5kWh
- 120.5kWh DC Extension Cabinet
- Total battery capacity: 50kW / 241kWh

- Engineering and technical support
- System integration guidance
Solution
The completed system combines Budle Bay Campsite's existing 65kWp solar PV installation with a 50kW / 241kWh AlphaESS battery storage system. The additional storage capacity enables more of the site's renewable generation to be retained for use when required, rather than relying solely on solar production at the point of generation. By retrofitting BESS alongside the existing PV infrastructure, HCA Energy has been able to enhance the site's renewable energy system without the need for a complete redesign.
Results & Impact
- The addition of battery storage provides Budle Bay Campsite with a more flexible approach to managing its existing renewable generation
- 241kWh of commercial battery storage added to the site
- Greater opportunity to maximise existing solar generation
- Reduced reliance on imported grid electricity
- Improved flexibility over when renewable energy is used
- Existing solar infrastructure enhanced through BESS retrofit
Value Delivered
- This project demonstrates how commercial battery storage can be successfully retrofitted to existing solar installations, helping businesses unlock greater value from renewable assets already in place.
- By supporting HCA Energy with the G3-H50 and additional storage capacity, Immersa helped deliver a straightforward, flexible upgrade that allows Budle Bay Campsite to make more effective use of its existing solar generation.
